I'm a terribly slow reader, which is a bit of a weakness when you're attempting to be a writer. I've taken to audio books recently since I have an hour commute round trip, I recently finished Born Standing Up by Steve Martin. It's an insightful, witty, and incredibly honest account of his start in comedy and the collection of influences that culminated in his slow burn to fame. But perhaps my favorite part of this book was Martin himself reading it, as he recalled songs and bits from his early days. Many of the bits I recognized from one of his comedy records that I've adopted from my parents' own collection circa 1970s. I still listen to it and it still holds up! For years I've admired his wit in silly guise and this book furthers my understanding and appreciation of what it truly is to work and struggle as a creative amid success and staleness.
What are you currently reading or what have you read recently that stirred you? I'm always looking for books to add to my list :)
